Shreveport is a city in the state of Louisiana. It is the most populous city and the principal city in the Shreveport – Bossier Metropolitan region. Shreveport as well serves as the parish seat for Caddo Parish. This Louisiana city was founded as a town at the convergence of the Brown Brick and Texas Trail. The Red River was cleared and made navigable by Captain Henry Shreve who commanded the US Army Corps of Engineers who executed the clearance of the river. A 180 mile natural log jam impeded passage for shipping. Henry Shreve utilized a modified riverboat to eliminate the log jam. The town of Shreve was named after the Captain, and was initially situated within the bounds of a parcel of land bought from the indigenous Caddo tribe.
When the Caddo Parish was founded in 1838, the town of Shreve was ultimately chosen as its parish seat. In 1839, the town was officially incorporated as Shreveport. This Louisiana city rapidly emerged as a key hub for steamboat traffic, and transported cotton and other agricultural produce from the plantations located within the Caddo Parish. During the US Civil War, Shreveport was picked as the capital of Louisiana from between 1863 to 1865.
